1. Ability to limit Custom Emojis for Guest Accounts

   Custom Emojis normally are a byproduct of the culture within the company. This can be inside jokes, meme culture, etc that the culture of the company dictates. Some emojis could be made from colleagues who agree to it within a company setting but not outside the company itself.

   Since you can invite Guests to the Mattermost server there should be a setting that allows or disallows Guests from seeing custom emojis.

   • A option in the Guest Access portion called 'View Custom Emojis as a Guests' (True/False)
   • When true, guest accounts have access to custom emojis
   • When false, guests only see the default emoji set (The one Unicode constorium sets)

2. Make the post-length limit a server setting — the fixed 16,383-character cap

   Not a duplicate. The forum's Eliminate 4000 character per message idea is marked Completed — it raised the cap to 16,383 in v5.0. This asks for the step after that: make the limit configurable (and/or raise the Postgres default), because 16,383 is now the wall for long-form agent and automation content. Completed ideas no longer collect votes, which is why this is a separate idea.

   What happened. A user pasted a ~22,000-character research brief and got "Your message is too long. Character count: 22703/16383." They attached it as jj.txt instead. That moved the brief off post.message and onto the file path, where it arrived as an untyped binary blob (a separate issue on our side), the agent skipped it, asked for a re-send, and the user re-uploaded the same file. About ten minutes and one confused conversation for four pages of text.

   What we checked. There is no setting: mmctl config get ServiceSettings.MaxPostSize returns invalid key, and the System Console has nothing. Reading post_store.go, the limit is max(posts.message column length / 4, 16383), computed once at startup — the 16,383 is 65535 / 4, the utf8mb4 worst case of the old MySQL varchar(65535), applied to Postgres too. The code comment says the column "may be manually enlarged to support longer posts," so the mechanism exists, but only as undocumented, per-database ALTER TABLE surgery that a future migration could silently undo.

   Why it matters beyond us. Long-form content into chat is no longer an edge case: pasted logs and reports (the original GitHub ask, #28434), LLM-generated summaries, and now agent briefs. Forcing everything over 16 K through file attachments loses inline rendering, quoting, and search, and splits every integration into two code paths.

   The ask. A server setting — e.g. ServiceSettings.MaxPostSize, admin-only, default 16383 for compatibility — validated at startup against the real column capacity the server already measures, so it can never exceed what the database stores. Clients already read MaxPostSize from client config, so web, desktop and mobile would follow with no client work. Alternatively, raise the Postgres default now that the column is not limited to 65,535 bytes.

3. Allow for summarizing channel from channel list

   Have AI agents summarize channel or category from channel list "..."

   The AI agents button at the top of a channel allows for summarizing unreads for that channel, but first you have to go into it, and there is no hotkey. I frequently flip through a large number of unread channels and would like a fast way to summarize them. If the ... had a option to summarize, that would make it much faster. And especially if I could do a whole category at once. A hotkey when in the channel would also be a reasonable alternative, but since there is a delay it would still be helpful to trigger the full category at once.

5. Allow Migrating Auth Provider to OpenID

   Currently, only migration to SAML and LDAP is supported via the mmctl user migrate-auth command. It would be great to have openid as an option too.

   My current Enterprise setup uses Gitlab SSO, however I'd like to migrate all user authentication to Keycloak OIDC, but unable to do so due to this shortcoming. While hooking up Mattermost to Keycloak works, it refuses login as identities overlap in Gitlab and Keycloak. Therefore mmctl user migrate-auth should be able to update the Mattermost Postgres to change auth providers to openid/oidc.

6. Show participant count for group messages in the Forward Message dialog

   In the channel sidebar, group message conversations display the participant count, excluding the current user. This makes it easier to distinguish group messages with similar or overlapping participant lists.

   However, in the Forward Message dialog, group message conversations are shown with the same generic “G” icon and do not display the participant count. When there are multiple group messages with similar members, this makes it harder to identify the intended destination at a glance.

   I suggest showing the participant count for group messages in the Forward Message dialog as well, consistent with the channel sidebar.

   This would improve consistency across the UI and make group message identification easier with a small visual change.

7. Add Emoji from Unicode 14.0 onwards

   The emoji picker seems to be missing all emoji added since Unicode 14. For example:

   Unicode 14 added 🫡 Saluting Face and 🫠 Melting Face.

   Unicode 15 added 🫨 Shaking Face and 🩷 Pink Heart.

   Unicode 16 added 🫩 Face with Bags Under Eyes and 🫜 Root Vegetable.

   Unicode 16 added 🫪 Distorted Face and 🫯 Fight Cloud.

   None of these show up in the emoji picker.

8. User defined default for schedule send time.

   Every day I schedule send messages for the same time. Once I schedule one it remembers my preference. But then it forgets it for the next day and I have to "choose custom time". Allow the user to define their suggested schedule send times.

9. Custom slash commands that get passed as message

   We should have the option to set custom slash commands as a passable message. If an AI agent bot is doing bad things, they need to be stopped. Typing /stop does nothing until I find the tiny link at the bottom and approve it to be sent. If you do not allow disabling of the interception, there needs to be a way to add those as custom slash commands that are sent as pain text. Requiring firewall opening, open access to the internet to an AI agent is just a bad option.

12. Add quote reply in addition to collapsed threads

    Currently, in order to reply to someone a few messages back, you hit the reply button and it goes into a thread. Alternatively, Mattermost could add a quote button on messages next to the reply button. When you click quote button it should work like reply in modern messengers with text of the message or part of it and name of the creator of the message.
    Threads are useful, but creating them for replying to paticular messages can be a bit of an overkill.

On ultra-wide monitors or when using the "Full width" display setting, this creates a huge physical distance between the short message text (on the left) and the reaction buttons (on the far right).
    This is exhausting for the user's eyes and requires excessive mouse movement for every single reaction.
    Suggested Solution:

    Allow the reaction menu to float near the end of the message text if the message is short.
    Or, add an option to display the reaction menu on the left side of the message.
    Or, trigger the reaction menu via a right-click at the cursor's position.
    

    This change would significantly improve the user experience for everyone using high-resolution displays.

15. Revert licence changes introduced in v11

    As was described at forum: https://forum.mattermost.com/t/future-of-mattermost/25396 current direction of Mattermost will destroy community around product. The idea is to revert recent changes, that were introduced in v11 (it would be nice to keep gitlab SSO).

16. Ability to “Also send to channel” inside a thread

    As we are starting to use threads more, it would be nice to keep the channel updated when important updates are made in threads.

    Slack solves this problem by adding a checkbox that says “Also send to channel” inside a thread. Would love to see a similar approach.

17. Show "channel purpose" in "find channels" modal window

    Hi!

    Please consider a small UI improvement for channel search.

    It would be great if, in the "Find Channels" modal window, the text from the "Channel Purpose" were displayed next to the channel name. This would significantly simplify finding the right channel without having to open each one from the search modal window.

18. Customiziable user profile fields (in addition to "position" and "nickname")

    Currently the user profile contains a nickname and position field. It would be awesome if it was possible to add additional fields in the System Console, and that users then could populate them with information.

    Depending on the mattermost server and what it is used for many different fields could be useful. For my specific case (student organization) I would like to add:

    • Phone Number
    • Pronouns
    • Year of study

    These fields would ideally show up both on mobile and desktop/web platforms.

19. Message Forwarding Control in Mattermost

    Currently, users cannot forward messages to others in Mattermost. It would be helpful if system admins could control this feature — either allow or restrict forwarding globally or between selected users. This would improve usability while keeping communication secure and flexible.

20. To use an Access Token to login at the Mobile app

    I see that the access token is only for the API, but I wonder if at some point it would be possible to use the access token to access the mobile app? and thus avoid using the password (or in my case keycloak credentials) on the smartphone.
