Channels gathering by theme
In my team we start to have a lot of channels.
Some are only for bots telling us the when the database is backed of when someone push on the git.It could be nice to gather them by theme like "automation" or "tasks"...
Someone suggested to add tags to channels, it's something similar I guess.

Asynchronous uploads (that do not block chatting)
Right now, when you upload a larger sized file you are blocked from chatting until the upload finishes.
It would be nice if the upload is handled separately so you can continue sending new chats while the upload is processed. Slack does this too.

no character length of name when display is set to "real name"
Now it is set to 24(?)
For example "Mansoor Nahasapeemapetilon" would be displayed as "Mansoor Nahasapeemapetil..."
There is enough space to display the whole name.

Add option to restrict DMs to users who share at least 1 team
Proposed text:
System Console > Team Settings > Direct Message options
Enable users to open Direct Message channels with:
- Any user on the Mattermost server // default
- Any member of a team on which a user is also a team member
Help text: ”Any user on the Mattermost server” enables users to open a Direct Message channel with any user on the server, even if they are not on any teams together. "Any member of a team on which a user is also a team member" limits the ability to open Direct Message channels to only users who share at least one team.

Limit matches for @ completion to users in the active channel
With a mattermost setup with hundreds of users, you get a lot of username matches when you type @, however if you're in a channel with only a small subset of the hundred users, you still need to narrow down the list by typing in more characters than necessary to match the name you want. For improved efficiency the list of users to match against shoulld be limited to the users currently on the channel.
This limit should of course not be applied if you are doing /msg @someone, and possibly not even when you mention @someone somewhere inside your post (as opposed to at the start of the line).

Filtering webhooks to process every post
I'd like to code up support for specifying remote filters that would get to process every post. When a post is sent to the server, it would get passed to the processing service(s), which would return a potentially modified message to get saved/displayed. It would also potentially trigger an incoming webhook that might add follow-on information. The specification of the "filtering webhooks" would be similar to that of outgoing webhooks. Would anyone else be interested in this?

Extend customization options to include message bg for current user
NOTES:
- I'm posting this as per the request made here: https://github.com/mattermost/platform/issues/2549
- I am not capable of implementing this myselfMattermost highlights user's own messages with a gray background (color depends on fg text color). It is entirely up to user's personal taste and preference whether these highlights add anything to the experience: I personally find them distracting and feel they disrupt the flow of the conversation. Also, visually, they're unappealing.
So, however you feel about these highlights personally, you should at least agree that they're a prominent visual feature. As such, users should be able to turn them off from the customization menu.

Add a system console option to set whether team admins can make a team open
Currently there is an option to restrict team creation. It would be nice to have the option where we let team admins create teams, but restrict open teams to system admins only

A clean way to specify a script that processes messages before they are displayed

Ability to customize the chat display/layout
Add a way to customize the display of the chat in the web interface. Currently a single message takes up two lines of text. If each message could be formatted as desired, the layout could be tailored to each users preference.
For example (with overly descriptive variable names):
%SENTTIME%| %SENDER%> %MESSAGE%
Would result in:
15:56| Kristian> Hello world!To build the current view, you could do:
%AVATAR% %SENDER% %SENTTIMEAGO%\n%MESSAGE%Or something like that.
As a long time IRC user, I feel that the WebUI for mattermost uses way too much space for a simple chat messages. With customized layout, it would also be possible to also show the exact time of a message, rather than "x ago" which I find extremely unprecise. :-)

Provide an option to show the amount of new messages in a channel
Actually we can see our amout of new mention in a channel, is it possible to do same thing with new messages ?
I think the bold text for new messages isn't visible enough, with a sort of buble like mentions it can be more visible.

Make Up Arrow behavior configurable
When you press Up Arrow, your expectations of what will happen may differ. A user coming from Slack might expect the current behavior, where you are allowed to edit your last message. A user coming from IRC, however, would like expect to cycle through his last typed messages by pressing Up Arrow one or several times. And there's an existing suggestion that it cycles through slash commands.
There is only one Up Arrow button, so the best compromise will likely be to make it user configurable. This would of course also depend on the two latter options being implemented.

Please use a different emoji/emoticon set, the ones you have make me use them less.
I'd put a sad face on the end there, but i'm not sure it will convey what i want..

Display extended message preview on hover
When you hover a reference to an existing message (such as where one has been quoted in a thread), it would be neat if, when you hover the pointer above the abridged message preview, you could see the full text. This would save a click or two.

Add user_real_name to outgoing slash commands or webhooks
An outgoing /slash command from mattermost sends information including the token, userid and username in the POST.
We would also like to see userrealname in the POST, without having to do another API call.
For example:
channelid=cniah6qa73bjjjan6mzn11f4ie&
channelname=town-square&
command=/somecommand&
responseurl=not+supported+yet&
teamdomain=someteam&
teamid=rdc9bgriktyx9p4kowh3dmgqyc&
text=hello+world&
token=xr3j5x3p4pfk7kk6ck7b4e6ghh&
userid=c3a4cqe3dfy6dgopqt8ai3hydh&
username=freddy
userreal_name=Fred+Smith1 vote
