Autocomplete usernames based on both username and fullname
We've recently switched from Slack to Mattermost and one thing I noticed is that the Slack autocomplete of (user) names is a lot more lenient. It seems that Slack autocompletes both on username as well as full name.
20 votesThank you Pascal for nominating the feature! The improvement has been added for v3.2.

Bot Users
Slack provides tighter integration for bots like hubot and calls it Bot Users. Slack's documentation describes it in depth: https://api.slack.com/bot-users
For example, one of the most import advantages is talking to the bot in a private manner (direct message).
It would be great if Mattermost provided this.

Upvoting and downvoting messages (like reddit)
Allow for updating and downvoting messages (like reddit) and/or have something like a uservoice feature request functionality as part of mattermost. Idea: Up- or downvote suggestions.

See who's online in a channel
It should be possible to see who's online in a channel. At the moment all you're able to see is a list of all users that are part of the channel, though in order to see who's online you need to create private channels.
40 votesThank you Frank for nominating the feature! It is available in Mattermost 3.4.

Command shortcut for messaging a user (/msg)
In IRC you can type
/msg username
or/msg username foo
to open a chat with a user and send them a message (everything after their username). This would be very useful to quickly switch to a conversation with a user. After typing/msg
, an autocomplete list of users pops up, and then you can optionally add a message. I've already built this, would you be interested in this making it upstream?7 votesThis feature has been completed and was shipped with v3.4.

compact message theme
Slack allows to have two different message themes. The first is called clean and it is what mattermost has right now. It displays the icon and the username on one line and the text goes onto the next line:
[XX] username time
[XX] <text goes here>Then there is the compact mode which basically removes the user icon and puts everything else onto one line:
time username: <text goes here>
Currently we have hacked some css to make that work, but I think that would be a useful addition in general.

Change max length of username so that full names can be used, Add Capital letters
Change max length of username so that full names can be used. As described in https://github.com/mattermost/platform/issues/1380 . usernames should be able follow enterprise rules. Ours is, e.g. name.lastname, or easier to read as Name.Lastname . Nicknames are not as good as well.

Add markdown support for Image Size
I miss the markdown for defining image size with
=WIDTHxHEIGHT
like
![user avatar](https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/XXXXXXX?v=3&s=32 =32x32)
auto height: =WIDTHx
because sometimes you do not want to get the full sized image :)

Prompt to invite a user to a channel when you mention them
In Slack, when you mention a user within a channel but they are not part of that channel, Slack alerts you to this and asks if you would like to invite that user to the channel - this would be an incredibly useful feature in Mattermost.
5 votesThis is currently on master and will be in the 2.0 release (February, 16th)

Ability to run Mattermost on Windows Server
- Producing a version of Mattermost that runs on Windows Server
- Providing install guide for Windows Server
- Fixing issues with config.json not rendering in Notepad
- Offering .zip download for Windows rather than tar
60 votesHuge thanks to Jared Shields for drafting the production install guide for Window Server and helping make the Windows version straight forward to install: https://docs.mattermost.com/install/prod-windows-2012.html
Several changes were needed, such as making config.json readable in Notepad, changing from tar file to .zip which Windows can open natively without installing 3rd party decompression apps.
We’ve updated the original request to make this about having the ability to run Mattermost on Windows Server, which is about providing a Windows binary with each release, which enables a sort of “Mattermost Windows Server User Group” to become available, providing peer-to-peer support for Windows releases.
Mattermost on Windows Server is available. It’s less mature than Linux right now and as it grows in popularity, we need to be clear to the community on status of vetting and support.
Specifically:
1. Need a meta-ticket to update Mattermost documentation to distinguish between multiple binaries
Software and Hardware…

Add @all mention as a mention as a configurable option.
A recent release of Mattermost removed the funtion that @all notifies everyone in the team.
Would it be possible to return this feature to the 'Notification Settings' as a possibility, but disabled by default?
The current workaround is to add
@all
as a keyword to trigger2 votesThanks for the suggestion and upvotes! (at)-all mention added as an option for notification settings with v3.1.

Hide preview
Having the ability to preview (for example) inline .gifs is amazing. But they can also be distracting at times. Having the ability to hide preview would be great.

Add search filter for usernames in Add Members to channel list
When adding members to a channel there is no "Search members" filter on the user list. It would be nice to use the same filter that is used in the direct message list.
Here is a similar feature request that was related to the filtering in direct message list:

Enable signup for users with email address from long TLDs
People with valid email addresses at sites with long top-level domains (ex. user@papalote.online) are being told to "Please enter a valid email address" at signup. More and more people are using non-traditional TLDs. They should not be blocked from signing in.
