add a feature to make messages 'unread'...
Thank you for nominating the feature! It is now available in Mattermost 5.18.

Here's another idea that folks here might be interested in:
marking posts as read on viewing, not all in channel at once - https://mattermost.uservoice.com/forums/306457-general/suggestions/13496355-marking-posts-as-read-on-viewing-not-all-in-chann

I agree 100%!!! Flagging is kind-of an alternative, but the problem is that there is no direct visual indicator of flagged messages in the UI and for me they always end up "lost".
Marking as unread would be a crucial feature!
A possibly easier alternative suggestion: color coding (yellow?) of channels that have flagged messages? This may be a quicker way to implement at least partial functionality of marking messages as unread

I'd like to have possibility to mark some channels unread but without marking whole browser tab as unread (applies to mattermost accessed via web browser).

I agree with colour coding in addition to the alert message about unread messages.

For me this is crucial. I can't even use MM on phone, because I have no way to recover which posts I looked at but still need to act on. Flagging just doesn't cut the mustard, because then my "reference" posts are mixed in with "To do". PLEASE enable this function!!! I don't care how, just enable it!!! And thanks for the wonderful platform and all the work that has gone into it.

Yes, I agree. I manage several teams, several channels. I often loose messages because many.
The message status read/unread should change the background color of the message so you can quicky see what are the unread/read messages.
All the messages should be unread by default. To change the read/unread status, I would see a button or a check mark "read" on behalf of each message, or more simple: nothing. you just have to click on the message to change its status.

Agree, this is very useful when you are busy and can't read a long thread, you mark it "unread" so you can come back to it later... -
