Loop GIFs on mouseover
The GIF preview feature is great, but a channel full of looping gifs is visually distracting.
Discord's implementation of this functionality plays the GIF once, then repeats it on mouseover. This works really well and would be a nice polish to the current implementation.

Ability to warn users about use of restricted terms
Since Mattermost archives all messages (including deletes and edits), some customers want to warn users before they enter certain content into the permanent record.
This feature would be similar to a speller checker that warn on certain terms, such as confidential terms or expletives.
The checking would happen on the client.

Allow to create a private Slash commands (only available for one user)
It could be interesting to add per user slash command.
For example, I use an RSS integration which allow me to manage my RSS feeds from Mattermost with Slash commands. I would like to set this command as private, to avoid other user to manage my feeds.3 votes -
User folders sorted by department or server group
I got asked by a colleague if it is possible to sort the Users because he had about 60+ Users in the Direct Messages section.
It would be nice if you can sort it by a specified department (or Position) or that you can create User groups (with specific permissions for example) and that they get sorted in categories like this.
An other way could be that everyone can create custom folders with users in it and can expand it if needed.

Add more colors of notification dots, and let users set a color for each channel
This will make MM much less distracting since it's easier to ignore chatter on "less important" channels.

I would like Mattermost to be able to consume any Slack-compatible webhook. It is very frustrating that I have to build a tool to proxy webhooks from GitHub for example.

Image preview should honor exif orientation
Mattermost fetches images from a URL to that image, however it ignores the exif data. This results in the preview often being in the wrong orientation.

Allow setting to enable message sending through 'Return'
So I understand that in iOS version 3.3.0, there was a change to disable messages from being sent after pressing the 'Return' key.
My team is coming from WhatsApp so the default is to send a message using the 'Return' key.
I would suggest adding a configuration item that would allow users to make this change as it's really based on personal preference.

Show all threads in one place
Option to show all threads in which a user participates in one place. Ask from Startup School.
Note: By default mention notifications for threads aren't turned on, maybe we should default them to on to see to what extent this helps.

hide offline contacts
It would be nice to have an option, that enables the user to hide contacts that are currently offline.
This would mainly apply to the "direct messages".
It is really annoying to search through a long list (~50) of contacts you often need to chat with, when about 50% are currently offline and are therefore of no interest at the moment.72 votes -

Pasting or attaching an image shows it as a thumbnail rather than inline with the message as it is for image urls

Allow for bots to directly upload images
Bots are only able to post text messages to rooms, however, it would be convenient if bots were able to attach photos as a message to the room.
We would prefer if our bot didn't have to upload images to an accessible URL and then post that url to the room (and then only get a preview of an image), as this adds a few extra steps to viewing the image and requires our bot to be aware of when it is done uploading the image to the host and then finally post the link to the room.

Personally, I spent 5 minutes to find this kind of information when I was checking that I didn't miss something and it is not yet available somewhere easily

possibility to re-link uploaded images
When you upload or drag'n'drop an image to mattermost, that image gains a new name that does not end with an image extension, thus if you try to "copy image location" or use the "copy public link" from mattermost their will give u a link that you can paste back to matter most to re-link the image in a preview mode.
