  1. Don't create duplicate installation on Windows when upgrading (MSI)

After upgrading the Windows desktop client from 4.3.1 to 4.3.2, both installed with the MSI, an entry for both versions exist in add/remove programs.

Two keys are created in the registry.

    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{A44E2D12-7D92-4ABC-8366-35E1CD827C01}

    and

    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{C0437176-EF43-4633-A55C-1164B09E8646}

Updating the application, which would normally be a simple process of running the MSI for the latest version with the /qn switch through any systems management system has turned into a scripting exercise. Either the GUID should stay the same or the old version should be automatically removed.

Additionally, removing 4.3.1 after installing 4.3.2 breaks the installation, as the files are installed…

  2. Desktop app: Add Change status option to Taskbar tray

In Windows, when you make a right-click on the notification tray icon, it would be nice to add a "Change status" option to switch easily between online, away, or busy.

  3. Allow Tags to be added like Reactions

Since you already plan to add Tags, I would like to propose the ability to add tags like reactions so that people other than the original poster have the ability to tag the post!

  4. Move the (edited) indicator on the same line as the edited text

I propose that the "(edited)" indicator is moved to the same line of the text that got edited. This is also how it is done in the Android app (and in Slack). Currently, in the Linux application (within Rambox), a new line is created just to show the "(edited)" indicator. I think this is a waste of space.

I think the fix is easy. The indicator got introduced here: https://github.com/mattermost/mattermost-server/pull/4923/files#diff-aba2376d04d1b8049e404bf2685c887fR91

So this has to be changed to not make a newline but instead put the indicator right after the rendered text.

  5. Make team switch shortcut configurable

Please, make the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+number for switching teams configurable.

Since the update, which brought this feature earlier this year, I'm unable to use the Mattermost Windows app, because I'm using czech programmers keyboard, which uses CTRL+ALT+numbers to type czech characters.
Typing is automatic process and it's not really possible to avoid typing czech characters this way. It's not a solution to re-learn typing because of Mattermost or switching keyboards before typing.

  6. Sort joinable public channels by activity

When there are many public channels to join, many are defunct. New users cannot distinguish these from active channels in the More Channels modal. It would be nice to see the most active channels first, see some measure of how active each is, and perhaps see how many people are in each channel.

  7. Pause GIFs in background

It would reduce resource usage and distraction if mattermost (like e.g. telegram) would pause GIF playbacks while the app is in background.

  9. Automatic detection of programming language syntax when you send code with markdown and the language is not specified

When sending code with this markdown syntax: https://docs.github.com/en/free-pro-team@latest/github/writing-on-github/creating-and-highlighting-code-blocks#fenced-code-blocks

And if the language is not specified for the highlighting. I propose to create a detection and an automatic addition of the language. Automatic detection with this library: https://highlightjs.org/

  11. Allow me to customize my ignore mentions list for notifications

Currently we can set notifications to Ignore mentions for @channel, @here and @all. I would like to customize that list, much like the opposite of the user settings for triggering mentions.

  12. Don't cover message text with the hover toolbar buttons

When I point at a message, a group of about 4 icons appears at the top right of the message. My annoyance is that this icon group covers part of the text of the message I'm trying to read. Please reposition this button group so that it does not obscure the text.

  13. Keep images collapsed when scrolling up

Often when I'm scrolling up in a chat, I'll lose my place b/c images suddenly start loading. Since images are now collapsible, it'd be awesome if unloaded ones (i.e., the ones further up in the chat) would stay collapsed until you manually expand them.

  14. inverted chat window configurable

This would not be only for the app. It is more a general thing for the appearance.
I would like to have a setting which gives me the option to invert the chat winodw. What i mean in detail with that is that the chat input would be on top. New messages would appear on top aswell and i have to scroll down to read older messages instead of up.
    thanks

  15. Create color themes that use OS native colors

Electron has several API functions for retrieving specific native colors from the operating system. The main function that does this is systemPreferences.getColor(color), but additional features are provided by systemPreferences.getAccentColor() and systemPreferences.getSystemColor(color). I'm not familiar with any examples of applications that have actually used these functions, but they could be especially nice on macOS Big Sur, where the system colors can be "vibrant"; that is, system colors vary slightly based on wallpaper tinting. Supporting native system colors could help the Mattermost desktop app feel even more at home in various desktop environments.

You can find the functions in question…

  17. Regex search through emojis

With the recent advent of .*ge emojis (ie sadge, madge, agreege) it would be useful to search for emojis matching a regex pattern.

  18. Add shortcut to change server

It is really great to be able to use the same client for multiple servers (which is not possible on the mobile app)

It would be really awesome to be able to switch servers with a keyboard shortcut ! It is the last use of the mouse I still have in mattermost.

  19. shortcut to format text as a code

Provide a shortcut (similar to ctrl+e on GitHub) to format part of the text as a code.

if single line is selected -> ctrl+e -> single line code (code)

if multiline selected -> ctrl+e -> multiline block

    code1

  20. Please, add custom notification sounds.

Now we have 6 built-in notification sounds, I and my team like none of them.

One has to disable notifications sounds instantly, because of the annoying bing and there is no option to change it to something more unobtrusive.
