You can enable the feature in Account Settings > Display > Collapsed Reply Threads (Beta). Please note that Collapsed Reply Threads are in Beta and we are still stabilizing the feature for release soon.

We’re very excited to share that we’ve begun design work on this project and are currently testing prototypes with the Mattermost community and some customers, with development starting soon after. We will be rolling out the threading changes in stages, starting with an experimental configuration setting that can be enabled by System Admins.

If you haven’t already, we encourage joining the Folded Reply Threads channel (https://community.mattermost.com/core/channels/folded-reply-threads) on our community server as we share progress updates and gather feedback.

Design has begun. We have just opened a new channel to discuss open questions and to review a work-in-progress spec if anyone is interested joining and contributing to the discussion!

Key outstanding questions we have:
1. How do folded replies, as proposed in the spec, work in permalink view, or when jumping to a post from search?
2. How to ensure people have the appropriate level of mentions and notifications and hence do not miss replies?
3. Should we allow users to expand the reply thread in the center channel, or only show reply threads in the right-hand side?
