Allow email batching / limiting
If a user is offline when they are sent @mentions or direct messages, they are given 1 email per message, with no restrictions.
If we could instead have a delay to gather several chat messages at once, it would reduce the amount of "spam" that is sent to the user.
An alternative would be to only email the user on the first mention/direct message they receive per channel.
Thank you Ryan for nominating the feature! It is available in Mattermost 3.4.

Was just about to post this! I woke up this morning with 17 emails from Mattermost and it's because a person sent me 17 direct messages.
I like what Slack did before I switched it, you could choose to get an email every 15mins, 1 hour or never.
If we don't give batch email, people will turn off these notifications as they will see them more as a hassle rather than informative.

I'm seeing immediate notifications by email even when in mid conversation in Mattermost. Wondering if the "away" detection is picking up on idle sessions on another computer / mobile device, and missing the fact that I'm currently logged in.
Posting here because I signed up to post on the JIRA instance @ PLT-2451, then wasn't able to log in straight away.

As always, I would like that to be customizable via the admin settings/config file.
