Moving from GitHub issues so this feature idea can be discussed and upvoted: https://github.com/mattermost/desktop/issues/52
Thank you to everyone who upvoted the feature! yuya-oc contributed the improvement for version 1.3.
Would anyone be open to retweeting the announcement (https://twitter.com/mattermosthq/status/758606758650777600)?

Will be done in v1.3. Then, command+{n} re-opens the window and switches to the desired tab.

It is extremely strange for a Mac application to not close a window on command-w. It is also extremely strange for an application that has menus to allow the closing of the window and not having a menu option to bring the window back.
There should probably be something like "main window" under the "View" menut with maybe a command-1 shortcut or something like this.
Current situation is very weird to a Mac user:
(a) command-w does nothing
(b) clicking on the close button on the window closes it, and there is no menu option that brings it back. In the github discussion it was pointed out that clicking on it in the dock brings the window back. That is also weird. Clicking on it in the dock should bring the application back to the front, without the window open, because the user closed the window. That state should be preserved. And a menu item with a shortcut to bring it back.
