mentions should be configurable not only for first name but also for last name and a combination of both
Within the notification settings, a user can choose to set his own mention triggers to "Your case sensitive first name "John"". It would be even more reasonable to trigger to a last name (because it's more unique then a prename). Furthermore case sensitivity should be an general, additional and optional selective checkbox for any of these settings.
This is now available with “Other non-case sensitive words, separated by commas.” setting under Account Settings > Notifications > Words that trigger mentions.

Hm, well, it's good to have this possibility, sure. But shouldn't this be the default? I means, it should be more than the prename which is likely more common than the surname - even if John Smith might not be the best example for this ;-)
I would just go for having pre- and surname as a default mention in addition to the existing username. -
Thanks Martin,
If "John Smith" wanted to get mentions on "Smith" and "smith" there's an option in "Account Settings > Notifications > Words that trigger mentions > Other non-case sensitive words" to add "smith" which should support this,
Would this address the use case?
