Autocomplete nickname with initial + Tab, and not only @initial + tab
Autocompleting usernames on initial followed by <Tab> has become a widespread standard since IRC, and is available in all Mattermost alternatives (Slack, HipChat, etc.).
Mattermost allows autocompleting usernames only when @ is used, but this serves a different purpose: linking usernames. Simple and straightforward autocompletion is still usefull in live conversations and the use of @ can be akward, or even difficult on some keyboard layouts. Simple autocompletion is actually missed by some users, and for instance I have a potential team member that refuses to join if he cannot use this basic feature he has been using for years. I miss it too, although not this extreme since I like Mattermost anyway.
There is already a suggestion on this topic, but it was flagged as Completed
one year and a half ago despite a comment from a moderator stating that the lack of autocompletion on simple usernames is a bug and should be fixed.
Is there a temporary workaround I can use tu customize Mattermost's behaviour until this feature is added in a future version of Mattermost?
Thanks.

Agreed this is really horribly annoying for IRC users being pushed across; every message starts out to someone - typing the first letter of their name and pressing 'tab' should auto-insert an @ if it is in column0 - and complete on names if at all possible. Is it me or does RocketChat do this right:

I've updated my Mattermost server to 4.0, hoping that the reluctant users that didn't want to join last year would join now, but they still value too much the Initial + Tab-autocompletion standard that IRC set years ago. In a sense, I very much understand that as I've myself got very used to that feature too and it feels just easier than @username, especially when the team is not set to display usernames.
Since I don't think this will be supported (the suggestion has not got much attention despite the few votes, and I understand that there might be more pressing priorities), is there a way it could be achieved with a plugin? If so, please could anyone point me in the right direction?
My users are locked in Slack because it offers Initial + Tab autocompletion and animated custom emojis. Other applications offer the autocompletion without @ as well, but only Mattermost offers animated custom emojis, let alone the improve privacy and security. Autcompletion is really the only thing is missed to make Slack migration absolutely seamless.

Moreover, @-completion still doesn't work properly. If I start typing someone's nick (xy for xyzzy) and then add @ before it, the completion doesn't pick up xy and instead of @xyzzy offers me @abba, and leaves xy in the input box, so it looks like @abbaxy

No, still not possible.

I did not use my Mattermost server since my team members did not want to join without this feature. However, I just upgraded it to 3.10 to see the latest changes. I think the only way to autocomplete nicknames is still to type @ beforehand, which I think is fair since the above feature request did not receive any official answer, but just out of curiosity: can someone using the latest Mattermost version regularly confirm the IRC autocomplete mode is still not possible?
