Scroll down to the bottom of the Direct Message section in the channel bar and click More...
Choose 2 names to send a message to and click Go
Type a message in the chat window
Expected behavior
On the recipients' clients, the taskbar icon should show a red dot with a number (eg: 1)

Additional Information
I find that users respond to direct messages more readily than group channels. The way the notifications are currently working, the notifications for multi-person DMs look more like channel notifications and people aren't getting back to them as quickly. Sometimes, not at all.

Our org has been asking us about this for a while now, and it would really improve the experience for users whose work normally doesn't involve Mattermost. They might not see something urgent for hours unless someone thinks to ping them directly.
I feel like, ideally, this would be enabled by default, with additional check boxes to opt-out in the Desktop/Email/Mobile Push Notifications menus. That would accommodate any folks who prefer the current notification style.

i would really appreciate if you could get to this feature...i've ended up looking kind of idiotic in front of my coworkers on numerous occasions, not getting their messages until minutes or even hours after the fact, because mattermost never gives me any indication to check group dms.

That's exactly what I would like. It's odd that they appear under Direct Messages, but don't send notifications like direct messages. I have mentions and direct messages only notifications on, but don't get any notifications for group DMs.

I'm looking for multi-person DMs to behave in the same manner as single-person DMs, both with the notification behavior in the system tray/taskbar (as noted above) AND with any other notification settings (e.g. I have desktop and email notifications for direct messages turned on, but group and individual messages don't behave the same way). Is that what you're requesting here?
