Add a configurable setting to show count of unread messages, mentions or channels on taskbar.
When a message is received, there is small red badge with number of total unread mentions (in the client taskbar icon and the browser tab).
Proposal is to let the user choose what to count on this badge - any messages, mention and direct messages only or even number of channels with unread messages

There are 254 votes, but no feedback from the developers?
Our team would also very much like to see this.
In particular, it also shows the message count in red when a new message is received in a MUTED channel - which is very annoying and certainly not what the feature is intended for? -

Must have this feature to track your messages.

I'd also like to see it on the browser tab, next to favicon.

We also used the counter to help us determine if a certain channel was experiencing a flood of messages which might indicate something of high importance.

One of the features we liked on HipChat was that the number of unread messages in each channel was visible.

It would be nice if you could (de-)activate the counter for the public and private channels individually.
