    I assume this would be configurable to keep it backward-compatible with the 'mention' badge (the default and the expectation of most people using Mattermost already) but be configurable to become the 'unread messages' badge if so desired...

    Ah, it sometimes shows the unread message counts, and sometimes it doesn't.

    I'll have to amend this with that I now also see a white round new message indicator. I'm not sure it was there to begin with, but even if it was, it again failed to attract my attention. The Mac dock shows a red icon with a message count, I expected red icons with message counts throughout to guide me where the messages are. Now that I know what to look for, I can obviously see where to go, but initially it is not at all obvious.
