I very much agree with this feature request. The blue taskbar icon badge is essentially useless for me, because it is essentially *always* present.
The reason for that is that I am joined to several company-wide "chit-chat" channels, such as the default «Town Square» and «Off-topic» channels, where there is activity around the clock. If I enter these all of these chit-chat channels to catch up, it usually won't be long before someone says something in at least one of these channels, making the blue taskbar icon badge re-appear.
I could conceivably mute all of these channels, however I would like to still be able to see which of them have unread activity when I open the Mattermost application and glance in the channel list on the left. If they are muted, this cannot be done (as they will be "grayed out" regardless of there being activity or not).
I am also a member of other channels dedicated to the teams of my closest colleagues, where we discuss projects we work on together. These channels are more important to me to keep up with. Whenever there is activity in these channels, I would like to know (even though I am not being @mentioned directly). If it was possible to limit the blue taskbar icon badge to only apply to these specific important channel, that would have been very nice.
One potential way to implement this would be to limit the blue badge functionality to favourited channels only. That is, I propose adding a configuration option à la:
[x] Show a blue badge over the taskbar icon only for activity in favourite channels
