I agree this is badly needed. The jump to recent needs to be there all the time if not at the bottom all caught up.
We have many busy channels and apparently a number of users including a manager at our company have grown to hate Mattermost because of this 'issue' of having to scroll and scroll down through messages. I just found out today.
Unfortunately it might be too late, without the knowledge of the IT department they have found and trialed another chat application and have pretty much decided that we need to change to use it instead of mattermost.
