Implement IRC bridge functionality for users who wish to connect with a conventional IRC client.
84 votesVery special thanks to 42wim for creating Matterbridge is an IRC bridge for Mattermost: https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge
#matterbridge on irc.freenode.net now connects to the Mattermost core team instance, which you can also join directly: http://forum.mattermost.org/t/discuss-mattermost-on-mattermost/405
Thanks to everyone for upvoting and discussing this feature!

Add title/summary line for YouTube previews
Currently, configuring the YouTube API key will allow you to include previews of the video but will not include any form of context - the user must provide this. It would be good to include the title and brief summary of the video in each post, as seen when you share a video from the Android YouTube app to Hangouts etc.

add desktop notification via Notifications API
User should be able to configure his notifications (which notifications to receive -mention, new message- and where - email, browser).
For desktop notification there's a W3C API. IE doesn't support them (http://caniuse.com/#feat=notifications)
Here's a wrapper https://github.com/alexgibson/notify.js5 votes -
support for @mentions and #hashtags
Basically a way to implement direct/public messages and #topics in channels.
The way I picture it:
- When in a message there is a @mention for a specific @username, the message would be posted in the channel AND the user would receive a private message as well (or email notification). Also, clicking on the mention will open a private message session with the user.- When a message contains an #hashtag for another #channel-name, the message will be posted in the current channel AND in the other channel. Also, clicking on the #hashtag will open the other channel.

Send email as a failover notification option
If a user is not actively receiving a notification (logged out of the web client), there should be an option to receive notifications via email.

Add (or support) a terminal CLI (ncurses?) interface.
It could be bare-bones compared to the web app, and it could even (from your end) just be an API for terminal interfaces designed by others (like this: https://github.com/evanyeung/terminal-slack), but many people will be using this program almost 100% for text and would love the predictability, scriptability, etc of running this in the terminal.
22 votesAs Jonathan noted in the comments, the Galois team has built an amazing terminal client called Matterhorn: https://github.com/matterhorn-chat/matterhorn
The latest release is compatible with Mattermost v5.X and can be downloaded here https://github.com/matterhorn-chat/matterhorn/releases
If you’d like to contribute to the project, learn how here: https://github.com/matterhorn-chat/matterhorn#contributing

Auto-update the feed in a channel automatically
Right now, you have to refresh or switch channels to get new messages in your feed. It would be nice if this would happen automatically.. (like in Slack.)
5 votesThe system is designed to updated dynamically via web sockets.
In the Alpha release of GitLab Mattermost in GitLab 7.14 omnibus there was a mis-configuration in the installer where for some users the updating wasn’t dynamic but it was fixed in GitLab 7.14.1 omnibus and should work in future versions.

Add a setting to send email notifications for all messages in channels you belong to
I shouldn't have to be tagged to be notified there was a response to a chat folder I am a member of. Email notifications would be wonderful.

Add notification persistence preference to configuration file
I get notifications from mattermost and then they disappear and I need to check the app again to see if anythign new came in. It would be nice to have an option to make a notification persistent for 1 to infinity

Encrypt messages on send or at rest like Slack
I find that we often have a need to exchange credit card or bank #s between our operations and accounting teams for product ordering, etc. I understand that Slack encrypts the messages on send. Is this the case for MM? Or is everything comes plain text to my browser?
