Parse channel search string to allow more powerful queries
I use the channel switcher with Ctrl+K a lot. Recently I joined two groups that have some overlapping members:
Group X has members aa, bb, me. Group Y has members aa, cc, me.
Now, it is quite tedious to search for them efficiently. If I search for "bb" and "cc" I will hit direct messaging with either of the two. And if I search for "aa" it is even worse: I get the two groups, plus direct messaging.
I suggest to allow for a search expressions as follows: "a b", "a c". I expect this to find group channels where…

CMD/CTRL+K should allow to switch to conversation from other team
When you are part of two or more team and you have unread channel in another team you've currently selected, you can not switch to it with CMD/CTRL+K. Since there is no keyboard shortcut to switch team (already discussed in various place), this would be nice to display the conversation from the other team in the conversation selection popup!

Improve the UX of the very first screen
The first impressions of an app are critical. This is the screenshot that I have when I have first installed the Matermost desktop client on Ubuntu. I think it will be the same for all platforms:
Almost everything on this screen is unfriendly to a new user especially a non-technical user.
1. The title
It just says: 'Add Server'. Nothing like 'Hi!' or 'Welcome to Mattermost!' or anything that displays some kind of enthusiasm for welcoming the user. This is where Slack shines - friendly, quirky (perhaps later annoying) messages.
2. Server Display Name
Even as a fairly technical…

Add shortcut to close current channel/direct chat
Hello!
It would be great to have a shortcut to close current channel or direct chat.
It could be CTRL+F4 or CTRL+W.

Implement custom team shortnames
Currently the team list shows the first two letters of the team name, if no custom icon is provided. It would be great if these two letters could be configured, so that they can be different from the first two letters of the team name.

Date and Channel Name
When we type a message it shows time but not shows date. Please add date with time and if possible also add channel name with time and date.
We copy the message for our reference. It would be more helpfull if Date and channel name added with time.

Include of preview of message in each notification
Please add setting of notifications 'Include of preview of message in each notification'. This option is needed for personal data protection when you screen sharing with any application like skype.
On one of your site webpages it says that "Mattermost offers alternative ... to Slack’s SaaS-only workplace messaging service". In Slack's this option exists in Notifications settings.34 votes -
Enable different spellchecking languages for each server
I switch between a German and English server a lot and one of them always has all of my messages underlined red, so being able to set the language on a per server basis would be great!

Give the option to move Direct Messages to the right of the channels (In between Channels & Chat)
It would be nice to be able to move the Teams / Channels / Direct Messages in separate blocks so to be customizable.
Right now i have alot of channels and my direct messages are all the way down. If i could move the direct messages to the right of the channels i think it would be neatly organized.
Teams > Channels > Direct Messages > Chat window
Cheers,

Desktop app: Offline mode to access channel content to truly replace email
I have many scenarios where I cannot connect to the mattermost server, e.g. on flights, on the train. In these cases I still want to be able to fire up mattermost and access the channel content, e.g. look up important discussions, attachments, images.
Mattermost is great to seamlessly structure discussions and work results, but to truly replace email, that content must be available offline.

CMD/CTRL+K should use fuzzy find methodology
When you are using cmd+k to find a channel or person, it would be nice if it used a fuzzy find searching mechanism.
Example:
trying to find person a.lastName
searching: "alast" doesn't find anything currently since it requires you search "a.last"4 votes -
Too many times opening proxy auth dialog
In company proxy environment, authentication dialog for proxy open as many as Mattermost server registered in App each time I open Mattermost App.
We want to reduce the number of times to open the dialog. (e.g. by setting auth for proxy from environement variables, or by saving auth info to config.json)15 votes -

Create Tear Away Chat Windows
The desktop app is WAY too clunky to permit multiple simultaneous conversations.
Mattermost needs "tear away" chat windows like Google Hangouts so that you can have side by side chats going.

Provide for multiple fonts
Recently the ability to choose fonts was removed. See https://forum.mattermost.org/t/removing-font-setting/3367. Now there is only one font, and it renders poorly for me (insufficient weight/contrast) on smaller high DPI displays. This makes the GUI very hard to use. Please provide a way to select among a set of fonts, or ideally specify my own.
Frankly the justification for removing the feature was weak. Let the user decide if the load time or other trade offs are worth the better rendering.
