  1. Show nicknames on each line while in compact mode

There should be an option to show the nickname on each line, when using compact mode. As a long-time IRC user, I expect to have the name repeated on each line.
This is specially annoying when the "New Messages" marker shows, where it should ALWAYS show the name in the line following the marker.

  2. CMD/CTRL+number should switch teams

Hitting CMD+1 should select the first team, CMD+2 should select the next etc. (I guess this translates to ctrl on Linux / Windows).

Right now its a lot of mouse movement to switch between teams.

  4. add or remove people from a group message

Sometimes, you start a Group Message and realize later that you need to add a new person to the conversation, or remove someone from the conversation.

Currently, there is no way to add/remove someone from a conversation. A new Group conversation has to be started, but all of the previous discussion details are lost, or have to be copied and pasted, one at a time, into a new Group conversation.

Please add the ability to add/remove people to/from an existing Group Message.

  5. Ability to disable rendering of animated emoji, or to hide posts, to improve performance

The problem I am having is that in some channels when users are using tons of animated emojis, I am seeing my CPU sit at >=30%. If I then switch to a more static channel, the CPU usage drops off the top of the list.

The feature I would love is to either:
    * Have the ability to disable the rendering of animated emojis (or gifs?)
    * Or to have the ability to hide posts

Currently I have to make sure never to leave a heavy animated channel as my active channel.

  6. Unread message notifier in launcher icon in Linux

On Ubuntu 19.04, the mattermost desktop client does not indicate unread messages in the launcher (I mean adding a little pop-up symbol to the icon as shown in this post about Windows #194).

I don't know if that is intended (no comparison on other systems). For thunderbird a similar thing exists, but I wouldn't know how to implement right away. I suggest a permanent "red dot" indicating new messages, or optionally a counter.

  7. Add a file download progress bar

You constantly need to check Explorer to see if file has finished downloaded or not, very bothersome. A progress bar / download indicator will be very helpful.

  8. Add an option to hide the menu bar

In the desktop client, it could be useful to have an option to hide the menu bar by default (Signal desktop has this, also an Electron-based app), since it's not used that much in day-to-day usage. It could appear when pressing alt (Signal does this, as well as Firefox). Ideally I'd like the application to be more in-line with Gnome design, using a headerbar, but I realize this would be larger thing, and may not be desirable in a third-party application…

  9. Add support for Mattermost Custom URL scheme on macOS

    Hello,

MacOS recently added support for custom URL schemes which allows other apps and browsers to open permalinks to content in the native app (rather than in the browser).

The use case would be that when you get an email to a Mattermost permalink, and you click on it in Safari, it'll open in the Mattermost app rather than a new tab in Safari.

The instructions to adopt custom URL schemes can be found here:

    https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/core_app/allowing_apps_and_websites_to_link_to_your_content/defining_a_custom_url_scheme_for_your_app

Thanks a lot for a great product!

  11. Miniature (icon) Mugshot in leftmost Direct Messages pane, shown before name

In the “Direct Messages” leftmost pane show a miniature mugshot, in addition to the persons name shown. The same mugshot /image as shown in message conversation list view.

Sometimes the name is not know or remembered, but the face is not easily forgotten (unless your blind) and might be recognized, when initiating a conversation.

My list contain about 100 developers, many with similarly sounding names and it would ease when trying to find the right developer.

When having many contacts often the names becomes very similar i.e John A Smith, John B Smith, John C Smith.

    Which of those is…

  12. Linux desktop app: start hidden in tray without creating window itself

Instead of creating the application and minimizing it application start must be done without creating window itself.

Lack of this option I have discussed here https://forum.mattermost.org/t/solved-linux-mattermost-desktop-start-minimized-from-command-line/6321/18

  13. Add notification timeout option

I've seen other thing saying there is a timeout option for notifications but I'm not seeing one in the Linux desktop app. Should it be there? If not, I'd really like a way to make the notifications to be persistent until I interact with them or Mattermost.

  14. Add badge for new messages that's visible in a pinned tab.

When you've pinned a tab on your browser the badge that appears to show new messages within the client isn't visible. At best you have to hover to see a (*) that denotes new messages.

There should be an immediately visible badge on a pinned tab for unread messages.

  15. Have the ability to jump directly to the first message in a channel

When a user needs to scroll up through a lot of history, it can take a lot of time and effort. It would be much better if there was a button or ability letting users to jump directly to the first message in a channel.

  16. Parse channel search string to allow more powerful queries

I use the channel switcher with Ctrl+K a lot. Recently I joined two groups that have some overlapping members:

Group X has members aa, bb, me. Group Y has members aa, cc, me.

Now, it is quite tedious to search for them efficiently. If I search for "bb" and "cc" I will hit direct messaging with either of the two. And if I search for "aa" it is even worse: I get the two groups, plus direct messaging.

I suggest to allow for a search expressions as follows: "a b", "a c". I expect this to find group channels where…

  19. CMD/CTRL+K should allow to switch to conversation from other team

When you are part of two or more team and you have unread channel in another team you've currently selected, you can not switch to it with CMD/CTRL+K. Since there is no keyboard shortcut to switch team (already discussed in various place), this would be nice to display the conversation from the other team in the conversation selection popup!

  20. Improve the UX of the very first screen

The first impressions of an app are critical. This is the screenshot that I have when I have first installed the Matermost desktop client on Ubuntu. I think it will be the same for all platforms:

    https://imgur.com/a/HY7FxOv

Almost everything on this screen is unfriendly to a new user especially a non-technical user.

    1. The title

It just says: 'Add Server'. Nothing like 'Hi!' or 'Welcome to Mattermost!' or anything that displays some kind of enthusiasm for welcoming the user. This is where Slack shines - friendly, quirky (perhaps later annoying) messages.

    2. Server Display Name

    Even as a fairly technical…
