  1. Add support for SQL Server

Most enterprises medium or larger have SQL Server licenses and supporting infrastructure (DBA team, servers, backup/recovery scripts, etc.) already established.

Support for SQL Server would be very helpful so we can leverage what we have in-house already.

  2. Team initials

Ability to change team initials / short name.

For example if your teams start with the same prefix, the initials are going to be the same for all of them.

Furthermore you may want to set it manually, or if the name is made of multiple words, use the first letter of each word as initials.

This is also related to https://mattermost.uservoice.com/forums/306457-general/suggestions/15465123-team-icon

Idea is to be able to differentiate teams easier :)

I also don't know about mobile apps, but in the web version on desktop the initials could potentially include up to 4 characters.

  3. Team specific position

Sometimes we don't have the same position in different team. Maybe it would be interesting to be able to have different position depending on the team, and not one position per account.

  4. Custom intro text for system, team and channels

Custom intro text for a system, team or channel, similar in set up to Custom Tutorial Text with markdown support and preview, that is displayed to a user when joining a specific system, team or channel, and the user needs to hit "Okay" to dismiss. The user should be able to find the message in the system, team or channel settings to review the info.

Requesting this because often organizations want to share more about the purpose of their Mattermost deployment, and include different links, e.g. link to naming conventions to use for channels, an internal user's guide to the…

  5. allow users to 'follow' others to create a filtered feed view.

Currently we have an in-built equality of posts which can become inefficient with high volume.

Recognizing the importance of hubs in scale-free network growth, we could allow for a filtered view of the main town-hall feed, where you just saw the posts (and related threads) of those you choose to follow.

One could also toggle back to the unfiltered view, but allowing people to cluster could make high volume teams more manageable.

Unlike Facebook, the user would remain in control - with no algorithm and the ability to toggle back to the unfiltered view.

  6. Magic Link (similar to slack) for logging into mobile or desktop app

  7. Create an editable message ('wikipost')

Our team documents project features by posting and re-editing posts. (They can then be flagged, or in future, made sticky, to keep them at hand.)

What would be useful here is to make a post that I choose to allow others to edit, in a wiki or confluence-style.

  8. Improve customization of push notification messages

Currently push notifications have very limited customizing potential. There is support to provide localized content, but the code assumes always prepends the sender's name to the notification text.

  9. Show the channel the incoming webhook has been set to

Currently I cannot find a way to know for which channel has been configured an incoming webhook (in my case, for integration with GitLab).

In the "Integrations/Incoming Webhooks" section, just appear the name of the webhook and the webhook URL it self, without saying for which channel has been set, and the option of deleting it. And in the GitLab side there's no way to know for which channel will be triggered the hook.

This come become a problem when you have several webhooks and channels.

  10. filter channels/users in the sidebar

It would be fantastic to have the option to search/filter in the sidebar.
In big organizations where you talk to many people, sometimes the sidebar gets enormous. A search field in top of the sidebar will allow to filter it and also search (when pressing Return)

It "should" keep the headers (favorites, channels, users) to keep it simple.

  12. open the emoji picker with typing ":", followed by pressing Tab

I'd really like to see the emoji picker that can be activated as described in the title, instead of the ":" followed by minimum of 2 characters as it is at the moment.
I'm aware of the full picker ticket https://mattermost.atlassian.net/browse/PLT-2354, but as i understand it doesn't include this feature.

  13. Add the option to increase font size

Currently the web interface has no option to increase the font size. This is plainly silly. Please fix this ASAP.

  14. Restore should be in Team edition or Channel delete in Team edition should be permanent

If i delete a channel i cannot create a new one with same name. nor can i restore the previous channel without enterprise edition.

I suggest to move feature of restoring to Team edition. Alternatively make channel deletions permanent so another channel with same name can be created.

  15. Option to disable user "Access History"

Mattermost seems to log all user IP as a default.
Maybe it would be a nice option to opt-out per user or system wide the logging of all IP addresses.

  16. Use the "fallback" field from Slack's webhook attachment format as text for notification, when the provided text is empty.

The slack attachment format defines a fallback field, that is required for attachments to be valid, and is used when the full-formatted message is not usable in a particular context (e.g. text-mode clients, notifications).

For example, Slack uses that fallback field for the text of notifications. I believe that Mattermost should do the same.

That would require changes on the webhook-related code, on the format of the post object that is forwarded in Javascript, and on the code that generates the text shown in notifications. I could work on a PR if you are favorable to the idea.

  17. Hotlink preview for uploaded image instead of thumbnail

When uploading images it will be nice to have a preview features (like when entering an image through a link) instead of the current generated thumbnail which is not very representative of the image. This is somehow how Slack is showing uploaded image.

  18. Prevent non-admin users to rename channels

I'm aware of your business model and I'm fine with an advanced permissions system in the paid edition. I'm also aware that you carefully thought through the channel management for basic users (see https://github.com/mattermost/platform/issues/1764) and think it's a good way of approaching things.

But please, consider removing the ability for every one to rename channels. This is not useful, doesn't really make sense and more importantly leaves the ability for anyone to ruin a setup (prank or sabotage). It also gives a feeling of totally uncontrolled environment for these users.

This small feature makes me question the entire usage…

  19. send message later

I'd find it realy useful to be able to send a message later at a given date and time (e.g. like Buffer).
Often, I'd find some useful or interesting info I want to post to the team chat at off-hours, and the message could either be overlooked because the timestamp will be quite old during work hours, or I'd disturb team members who have hot keywords defined and get notified automatically.

  20. Order DM and Members list by online indicator

    1. Member list (popup box) in the header
    2. Direct Messages list
    • If you can change order by in this lists to order first by online status, then second by name, then it could be more useful.
